About TRC Dare Mighty Things

Mission Ready

Most STEM programs hand kids a screen.
We hand them a mission.

Real engineering means building with your hands, testing, failing and trying again. Most kids never get that chance. At Tennessee Robotics Center, every student gets a mission, a mentor and the tools to see it through.

The founder

It all started in a garage

In 2011, Coach Mike's son Ben asked a simple question: "Dad, can I join a robotics team?" So they set up a robot table and a few robot kits in the garage. They built robots, they competed, they failed and they got back up. Other families heard about it and asked to join.

Fifteen years of coaching FIRST LEGO League and FIRST Tech Challenge teams followed. Today that garage lab is Tennessee Robotics Center, where K–12 students design, build, code and compete alongside mentors who care as much about their character as their code.

Why it matters

Screens are easy to find.
A launch pad isn't.

Most enrichment teaches engineering through an app or a kit with one right answer. At TRC, students plan in real engineering notebooks, build real robots, write real code and test until it works. When it doesn't work, they find out why and fix it. That's the part that turns a curious kid into an engineer.

Artemis is taking people back to the Moon, and the first person to walk on Mars is probably sitting in a classroom right now. That's why you'll find mission patches on our walls and rockets on our shelves. Our students aren't just learning space history. They're getting ready for space futures.

What we hold every student to

Five Mission Ready standards

These are the difference between a student who finished a kit and a student who can actually engineer. Every TRC class, lab and team is held to all five.

01

Students learn by doing the work

Students learn engineering by doing it. Every project runs through our Engineering Design Cycle: define the problem, build a prototype, test it and make it better.

02

Students own the mission

When students make a mistake, they fix it themselves. When they make a mess, they clean it up. When they start a project, they finish it.

03

Students fly into the wind

Students try the hard thing before asking for help and find the tools and parts they need on their own. We don't protect them from failure. We prepare them for it, so they learn to fail forward.

04

Students keep the lab mission ready

Students keep their workstation clean, put tools back where they belong and leave the lab ready for the next crew. They document their work in their engineering notebook, because if it isn't documented, it isn't finished.

05

Students train up the next crew

Students practice skills until they become second nature, then pass them on. Many of our mentors are TRC high school and college students who now teach the students coming up behind them.

TRCharacter Vectors

Direction and magnitude

In engineering, a vector has two parts: which way it's headed and how far it goes. That's how we think about raising young engineers. God provides the direction: purpose, ethics and calling. Students bring the magnitude: effort, skill and perseverance.

Free weekly lunch and devotion sessions for enrolled students in grades 3–12.

Safety first, every session
Real tools come with real responsibility

Every session starts with a safety briefing before anyone touches a tool. Our staff are [CPR and First Aid certified and background checked], and trained TRC mentors are in the lab with students at all times.
